The Premier League’s Final Countdown Begins
The Premier League is an odd division at the best of times, but in addition to that, it’s also considered to be one of the greatest that there is to be found across the world of football. The beautiful game has evolved a great deal over the years and English football has evolved right alongside it, and as a result, many of the top teams in the division are also the top teams across Europe. It’s a process which has taken a lot of time as many fans and pundits will confirm, but in the modern era, we all know the Premier League to be one of the greatest leagues on the planet.
As we look ahead to the immediate future of the division, though, there’s a great deal of uncertainty – but we mean that in the best way imaginable. There’s still so much to decide and it’s pretty much impossible to determine who is going to come out on top in most regards, which will keep us all guessing until the final whistle blows in May. The excitement levels are going to be through the roof over the course of the next few weeks and rightly so, as teams up and down the country learn what awaits them.
Title Race
At this moment in time, it’s safe to say that Manchester City are in control of the title race – and nobody would dare say otherwise, unless you’re the most optimistic of Liverpool fans. The Reds had it in their own hands after a series of slip ups from Pep Guardiola’s men, but now, the door has been swung wide open once more. There’s still a lot of games to be played and points are almost certainly going to be dropped at some stage, but if you’re a City fan, then is there really all too many reasons to be concerned?
They’ve got a pretty decent run-in and whilst there are going to be some tricky games for them to deal with, they’ve been able to see off challenges from England’s finest for many years now. They have played some truly tremendous football since the season kicked off back in August, and many would argue that they deserve to win the title for a second straight year. However, with that being said, Jurgen Klopp won’t give up without a fight and we can easily picture this race going down to the wire on the final day of the season.
Top Four
Tottenham, Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea. That’s the order in the race for the top four as it stands, with Spurs occupying third and the Blues lingering all the way down in sixth. There are just four points separating all of the aforementioned teams, and to be honest, that makes us want to scream just a little bit. The idea that all of these teams are going to be competing for just two UCL spots is baffling, and that’s no exaggeration. In addition to that, two of them are still actually in the Champions League and could qualify for the competition that way – whereas the same is true of the other two teams, who are enjoying a strong spell in the Europa League.
Spurs and Arsenal are in the driving seat, but to be honest, that’s not the terminology we would use for Tottenham. They seemed to be involved in the title race (on the outskirts) just a month or so ago, and now, they’re battling it out for the top four. They’re known to be ‘bottlers’ in their own right and whilst you may find that a little cringeworthy, it’s hard to argue with the evidence. The Gunners, on the other hand, have a pretty easy run in to deal with, and as long as they can balance their Europa League duties they should be in for a good end to the campaign.
Chelsea, on the other hand, are struggling. Their recent loss to Everton confirmed that they’re beginning to slip down the table, and that’s not the kind of position they want to be in during the middle of March. United, on the other hand, are a little bit more comfortable, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer shouldn’t go celebrating his proposed new job just yet. Fans have been quick to suggest that he has already been able to land the permanent position, when in reality, he’s got a long way to go.
Battle for Seventh
Wolverhampton Wanderers are in the driving seat for seventh spot, but we need to clarify why we’re bringing this up. Because Manchester City have already won the Carabao Cup, a win for them in the FA Cup will open up the door for seventh place to enter the Europa League. At this moment in time Wolves and Watford lead the charge, and ironically enough, the two will also face off in the FA Cup semi final. The variables are almost too baffling to list, but the long story short is this: we’re in for one hell of a season for these two teams.
Interestingly enough West Ham United, Leicester City and Everton have also entered the conversation in recent weeks. They seem to be determined to spoil the party for either Wolves or the Hornets, and who can doubt their ability to do so? They’re all a little bit hit and miss when it comes to consistency, but so is everyone in this league. All they really need to do is put a solid run together between now and the start of May, and from that point on, it truly is anyone’s ball game.
Relegation Battle
We hate to be the ones to break this to the masses: but it’s not looking good for Fulham and Huddersfield Town. They’ve both looked destined for the drop for quite some time now, and it seems like a matter of weeks before their respective relegations are confirmed. The Cottagers haven’t exactly had a great return to the top flight but the Terriers should be applauded for their ability to avoid an instant drop back into the Championship. Sure, this season has been poor, but this is a hard division.
Crystal Palace, Brighton, Southampton, Burnley and Cardiff feel like the main contenders for the third relegation spot, and whilst Newcastle & Bournemouth could always be dragged into it, we think that’s unlikely. Our official prediction is for the Bluebirds to go down, mainly because it just feels like Warnock isn’t going to get anything else out of this team that would save them. They’ve pulled off a series of shocks this year, but actually surviving is another thing altogether.
