Pochettino’s Master Plan?

We recently spoke about the ins and outs of what we think is going to happen with Tottenham Hotspur in the lead-up to the new domestic season, and now, we’ve got a little bit more to work with after their recent game against Barcelona. Whilst it clearly took them a while to get going they certainly resembled a team who were more than willing to get their head down and get stuck into the game when they needed to the most, and perhaps that’s the kind of attitude that Mauricio Pochettino wants to implement throughout the upcoming campaign.

As we all know it’s difficult to manage several competitions at once and more often than not, you need to work out what your priorities are going to be. Spurs were able to finish third in the top flight last season which means that they’ll have to contend with Champions League participation once again, and this time around, it’ll be interesting to see whether or not they try and really go far in the UCL at the expense of what happens in the Premier League.

A title challenge certainly isn’t out of the question but in terms of squad depth, they don’t really have the legs to keep pushing the likes of Manchester City and Manchester United over a 38-game period. We aren’t suggesting that they still have their ‘bottle-job’ tag by any means because it feels like they lost that a long time ago, but now that the honeymoon period has well and truly worn off for Mauricio Pochettino, what is he going to have to do in order to be considered a success this season?

Winning a cup competition may be something that brings the fans onboard even more, but their love and affection of him will only last so long if he’s unable to find that consistency that’s necessary. Harry Kane is sensational and that’s not exactly a secret, but if he goes down with an injury, they could really struggle to find the goals they need to push them up to the top of the Champions League as well as the Premier League.

Their impending stadium move is hardly helping things, either, with so much uncertainty surrounding the final stages of things being built. It’s definitely an exciting time to be a Spurs fan, but if they aren’t able to get their footing in the new stadium during the first few months of the season, then the doubters will come out in their numbers once again.

Tottenham are starting to round off their pre-season preparations, and they’re still something of an unknown entity – but we kind of like that. They’re always a team who have seemed to thrive on the sink or swim mentality, and that seems like what they’re going to showcase when they take on AC Milan in midweek.

We’re predicting a composed yet professional performance that won’t allow for too many goals on either side, but will prove to people once and for all that people (including us) need to stop underestimating Tottenham Hotspur Football Club.
