New York Red Bulls Have Golden Opportunity
Major League Soccer is a league that is often vilified by most football fans around the globe, and for a long time, it was well deserved. The standard of play wasn’t great and it seemed as if players were purely going over for the money, and whilst that may still be true to an extent, it feels like the tides are starting to turn just a little bit. In fact, this season, we’ve seen arguably some of the best football in the States since the inception of the league itself.
The format is always something that is going to be heavily debated, but when you consider how successful the playoff structure has worked for all of the other major leagues in the USA, it makes sense to see it being utilised here. Every single season we’re seeing new rules being introduced, young Americans making a name for themselves, and more expansion teams being given the chance to shine. It’s exciting, it’s different, and one of the teams that have been there to oversee it all is New York Red Bulls.
They’ve been in existence since the inaugural season of MLS action and whilst they may have only reached the MLS Cup final once, they’re a club who are looking to build something – and even though they may now be battling it out with neighbours NYCFC for supremacy, it feels like they’re on the right track.
So far this season they’ve won 11 of their 18 games with just five losses to their name, which is already a substantial improvement over last season. Looking ahead, it’s evident to see that they’ve got some momentum, and as they rest in 3rd place in the Eastern Conference with two games in hand over NYCFC who are in 2nd, it seems obvious to us that they’re building towards something big here.
They seem to thrive under high-pressure situations and that’s what will be greeting them when they face New England Revolution, which is a rivalry that we’ve seen play out in many formats – including the Super Bowl between the Giants and the Patriots.
NYRB have a system in place that should allow them to play out from the back and really intimidate the Revolution, which isn’t something that many teams have been able to do. They’re quietly flying under the radar as a team to watch in the grand scheme of the race for the playoffs, and the key now will be maintaining this consistency. If they can rack up a few more wins then they’ll start to be recognised as the top dogs that they are, and as we know, seeding can be vital in the lead-up to the post-season.
Bradley Wright-Phillips continues to lead the way as an icon in NYC, and after the club’s comeback victory over Sporting Kansas City last week, it really does feel like they’ve got their mojo back. While the Revolution did manage to inflict one of the two defeats NYRB have suffered on them back in June, revenge is something that they’ll be gunning for.
