Liverpool to Lay Down Champions League Marker with PSG Victory
The Champions League kicks off this week and the tie of the round takes place at Anfield where Liverpool take on Paris SG. From the minute these two were drawn together, Liverpool fans will have been looking forward to a big European night against the French club, and they haven’t had to wait long. Despite being losing finalists last season, Liverpool somehow ended up in pot 3 of the draw, so alongside Paris SG they also have to face Napoli in what is going to be a tricky group stage for them. It is winnable though, and with the way Liverpool have started their domestic season they will go into this game feeling very confident that they can get off to a winning start.
The fourth team in this group is Red Star Belgrade, and seeing them finish with no points would not be a surprise. Each of the three big teams will be targeting them for maximum points, and they will also want to pick up some valuable goals just in case goal difference is needed to separate teams in the group. Napoli take the minnows on first, a game they are expected to win, but they are sure to have one eye on what happens at Anfield when the big two meet.
Is This Liverpool’s Year?
I think this is a phrase we have heard a couple of times over the past few seasons, but is this Liverpool’s year? It doesn’t matter if you are a big fan or a rival of theirs, you have to have been impressed with the start they have made this season and they are certainly looking like the most likely challengers to Manchester City. The business Liverpool did during the summer was an indication of their plans, but seeing things on the field makes it all seem real now.
While Arsenal and Chelsea were bringing in new managers, Manchester United were failing to land their top targets and Tottenham were signing no one, Liverpool were busy spending over £150 million fixing the problems they have had for the past couple of seasons. Although we see the Premier League as having a top six, with Manchester City leading the way, if City were not involved then I think Liverpool would be clear title favourites here, they have separated themselves from the other four clubs in my eyes.
However, the next obstacle for them, and the toughest one, is to win a meaningful trophy. That means either the Premier League title or the Champions League, both of which are on the agenda this season. The loss to Real Madrid in the final of the Champions League last season hurt at the time, and Liverpool fans didn’t enjoy the experience, however in the long run it could have been exactly what the team needed. Next time they make a final, because I think they will soon, they can use the experience they gained from that game to their advantage. It was a footballing lesson from the vastly experienced Real Madrid team, one that many teams would have struggled against.
We are only in Sepetember so it is a littl early for Liverpool fans to be getting excited but if this run continues then they are going to have to bite the bullet and start shouting from the rooftops about how good their team is. Their front three needs no introduction and over the past 12 months they have gradually signed new players to plug all the gaps that caused defensive issues. It may be the Champions League, or it may be the Premier League but this really could be Liverpool’s year.
Can Paris SG Continue the French Revolution?
The French national team lifted the World Cup this summer and put themselves on top of the world. Now we are back to club action, and can Paris SG be the team to further add to the French football revolution? They have a good grip on the domestic game, and are far superior to any other team in their league. However, it is on the European stage where their success will be determined and this year they will look to show further improvements in the Champions League.
There has been a lot of money spent on this team, much more than what is needed to win the French league. They have shown glimpses of promise in the Champions League so far, but they have never really stamped their authority on the competition and looked like genuine winners. Eventually this has to chance with the investment we have seen in the club, could that be this season? Or will the fans have to wait once more for European glory?
Liverpool vs Paris SG Betting Tips
If you only watch one Champions League game this week then try and make sure that this is the one. This looks sure to be the best game of the week between two clubs who could genuinely win the whole tournament, and under the lights at Anfield is the perfect setting for what should be a very entertaining affair.
Those who like to bet on goals will no doubt be drawn to this game, both teams have fantastic attacking players in their ranks, who will be looking to make their mark on this game. It would be no surprise to see plenty of goals here, and both teams getting on the scoresheet, such is the talent on show.
as far as who will win the game goes, with how Liverpool are playing I simply have to side with them. They are playing some very exciting football right now, and if they keep it up they are certain to challenge for both the Premier League and the Champions League. Whether they can keep it up remains to be seen, but they have added depth to their squad this season, to try and prevent tiredness becoming an issue towards the end of the season.
Regardless of that, it is right now when this game is going to be played, and right now when Liverpool are playing great football. I’ll be backing them to beat Paris SG in this one, I think there is little to choose between them but a combination of recent form and the home crowd gives Liverpool the edge. Anfield comes to life when Liverpool play in Europe under the lights and the fans can have a big impact here, making it a difficult night for the visitors.
I’m backing Liverpool to win this one, tune in if you can because it should be a fantastic game between two potential Champions League winners, with the home side edging it.
