Leeds to Continue Winning Streak against Wigan on Friday
Just four games remain in the Championship season, and two of those will be played across this weekend, with teams playing on Friday and Monday. Six vitally important points are up for grabs for those teams battling it out at the top, and that includes Leeds United, who are looking to maintain their winning streak here.
Leeds have won their last two games while promotion rivals Norwich and Sheffield United have drawn both of theirs. That has given Leeds four additional points on the board compared to their rivals, kicking them clear of Sheffield United, and reeling Norwich back in towards them. Leeds are four points behind Norwich in the standings heading into this weekend, and three ahead of Sheffield United. All three clubs are at home on Friday, and all playing at different times so they are able to watch each other and see how that affects the league table. Leeds play in the middle, with Sheffield United before them and Norwich after them. All three face games they can win, and all three are priced up at odds on by the bookmakers to do so, but it is Leeds who appear to have the easiest game on paper.
Leeds host Wigan at 3pm on Friday, and their opponents come here without a win in their last four games. Leeds on the other hand look to be standing tall at exactly the right moment as this promotion race goes down to the wire. The fans are playing a huge part in their success, following the team all over the country and Elland Road was bouncing last week when they won 1-0 against Sheffield Wednesday. Expect the same again, this is a tough environment to play in, but something that is certainly helping Leeds a lot right now.
Wigan are down in the relegation scrap right now, although as thing stand going into the weekend they are safe. They have a two point cushion over Rotherham who are the team directly below them and in the drop zone, so they know that it could be all change on Friday if they fail to win and Rotherham get three points.
One positive for Wigan is that they are finding a way to pick up points, and have done so in four of their last five games which has certainly helped their quest for survival. However, this is a very big test and they may have to settle for nothing here, and the re-group ahead of their next game in a few days.
Could Leeds Survive in the Premier League?
This is the most excitement that Leeds fans have had for a very long time, their team is on the cusp of making it up to the Premier League. Should that happen then Leeds have the task of remaining in the Premier League, but what chance do they have of doing that?
On the face of it, Leeds have an excellent chance of staying in the Premier League, because of the squad they have and the potential money they would spend. Something they need to avoid is falling into the same hole as Fulham did. They too appeared to have a good chance of survival in their first season back in the Premier League, but they tried to do too much, spent a lot of money and ruined their squad.
Leeds seem to have a squad that gets along well, and players that play for each other so it is vital they don’t go down that path. They should instead look to take small steps if they do get promoted, and add a sprinkling of talent to their already decent squad. Leeds don’t need wholesale changes to stay up, and that will be their only aim next season, of course, if they are lucky enough to get promoted this season.
Leeds vs Wigan Betting Tips
What a massive game at both ends of the league table. If things go well for Leeds tomorrow, they could be one point off the top of the league, and six clear of third placed Sheffield United with three games to go. If things go bad, they will be down in third and holding onto a playoff spot, not an automatic promotion spot.
If things go well for Wigan they will move five points clear of Rotherham in the relegation zone with three games to go, while if things go bad then they could end up inside the relegation zone themselves. That shows just how much this game means to both teams, not just one, and it is going to be a fascinating watch.
Take away the outcomes for both teams, and compare the players on paper for a minute and it is clear to see why Leeds are at the top of the league and Wigan are at the bottom, there is a big gulf between these two. Wigan have character and a willingness to win, but they lack the quality to compete with a team like Leeds.
I am backing the Yorkshire club to win this game, but not as a straight win, I am using the handicap line as I think Leeds will dominate the game and win by more than one goal. I am backing Leeds -1 here, which is available at just under evens and represents good value as they aim to win again as they big for promotion to the Premier League
