Iran inches from qualification after VAR controversy
It was nearly a dream come true for the Iran players and fans last night, as they came inches away from booking their place in the knockout round of the World Cup. In a very controversial finish to their game against Portugal, Iran drew 1-1 to claim their fourth point of the group stages, but that was only enough for third place behind winners Spain and runners up Portugal.
Iran have certainly exceeded expectations this summer, many expected them to lose at least two and probably all three of their World Cup games. However, we have seen a strong defensive team play for each other, and come extremely close to what would have been the biggest upset of the group stages.
VAR was at the centre of the action last night, with both teams being awarded a penalty through the system. Portugal missed theirs, with Cristiano Ronaldo missing the chance to go join top of the golden boot standings when his penalty was saved. Then late on a controversial decision saw Iran awarded a penalty, giving them a chance to draw level and potentialy give them a chance of qualification. They took their chance, and althouh they only had a couple of minutes to play, it was certainly game on.
During stoppage time after some poor defending by Portugal, Iran had their chance of glory. Mehdi Taremi found himself in space in the Portugal penalty area with just seconds to go in the game, but saw his shot his the side netting. Just a few inches to the right and that would have gone in, causing a massive upset. However, it wasn’t to be for Iran, who now head home, but can do so with their heads held high after picking up four points more than a lot of people thought they would this summer, and performing with some credit.
Spain and Portugal Progress Ahead of Iran in Group B
That late goal coupled with a late goal for Spain in the other game in Group B meant that it was Spain who won the group and Portugal go through as runners up. That makes a big difference to the line up at the last 16 stage, and it is now Spain who have the easier task on paper as they take on hosts Russia. Portugal on the other hand have to face Uruguay, a dangerous team who are looking better with every game they play. Both games should be very good to watch but Portugal will feel they have thrown away an easier passage by not winning the game against Iran, and the game against Uruguay will be a real test for them.
That game takes place on Saturday and Uruguay are slight favourites to win it in 90 minutes. They struggled in their opening game, but as the tournament has progressed they have looked much better. A 3-0 victory over hosts Russia won them the group, and they will be looking to continue their good form on Saturday. If they can play like they did against Russia then that could be enough to book them a quarter final place.
