Can Alphonso Davies Be A Superstar?
As we look ahead to the start of the Championship season this weekend and the Premier League season next, it’s easy to forget that many of the top European leagues don’t actually kick off for another few weeks. Many of the clubs that millions upon millions of fans follow from around the globe are waiting to see some of the world’s best spring into action, and with that in mind, we thought it’d be best to round-up some of the most notable recent transfers from the Bundesliga over in Germany.
As you can see by the title our attention is immediately drawn to Bayern Munich, who continue to reign supreme as the German champions – and they’re showing no signs of slowing down. They recently opened their chequebook once again in order to land Alphonso Davies, who has been tipped as the next big potential wonderkid for quite some time now. At the age of just 17 he’s still got a long way to go in terms of his development, but as long as he stays on his current trajectory, then he could be onto big things.
Since 2015, Davies has been progressively making steps towards fulfilling the potential that everyone knew he had – and now, the Canadian will be thrown in at the deep end. Thankfully he’ll get a few more months in Major League Soccer before he heads over to Germany, though, meaning that he can slowly but surely get his head around the idea of playing for one of the biggest clubs around Europe.
Whilst his records from a domestic standpoint are impressive, one of the main things he’s got going for him is that he’ll be one of Canada’s leading lights in the build-up to the 2026 World Cup – with Canada being one of the host cities.
Last year he became the youngest player to ever appear for the national team, before then being the youngest to score despite not being an ‘out-and-out goalscorer’ so to speak. He showed flashes of brilliance in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, too, and as long as he can continue to take things slowly but surely, he should continue to develop at a rapid rate.
In terms of notable moves elsewhere, veteran Claudio Pizzaro refuses to ride off into the sunset just yet after he signed a one-year deal with Werder Bremen from Cologne. The forward has been moving towards the end of his career for quite some time now with many believing that last year would be his final season as a professional, but the Peruvian is determined to keep going in the league where he made a name for himself in the first place.
Davy Klaassen, who experienced a nightmare tenure with Everton, has also been handed a chance in Bundesliga by Werder Bremen with a reported fee of €13.5 million being paid for him. The Dutchman really struggled to find his footing at Goodison Park which is a shame, given that there was so much excitement surrounding his venture into English football. Fortuna Dusseldorf shouldn’t be forgotten either as they keep picking up some underrated names, with Dodi Lukebakio and Mathias Zimmermann being viewed as players who can make a difference in their respective positions.
In terms of Alphonso Davies, though, arguably the most interesting thing will be to see how the more senior Bayern players nurture him and help him grow. Sometimes there can be a ‘chip on the shoulder’ kind of attitude with moves like these, and regardless of whether or not he’s thrust straight into the first team or spends time with the youth squad, accepting him as one of their own will be the most important factor.
